YIMAN began as a boat house. Survey hulls working real harbors, unmanned vessels on national missions, racing powerboats built to slam through chop: salt water is where our composite discipline was earned. Everything else we build inherits it.

As Executive Vice President of Oullim Motors, YIMAN's founder directs the chassis and the carbon exterior design; that body takes shape in this atelier.

The Craft

The mold is machine-made.
The surface is not.

Composite work rewards the hand. Fiber orientation chosen for the load, resin worked into the weave, a surface faired until the light runs straight along it. We choose the process to fit the part, not the other way around.

And beneath the hand sits the mechanics. A laminate is only as strong as the direction its fibers run: tension follows the thread. Plies crossed at 45 degrees carry load in every direction, but a part that lives under one dominant force, a rear wing at speed or a hull slamming through chop, asks for fibers aligned to that force and a shape engineered for the flow around it. Lay-up design here begins with load paths and aerodynamics, not patterns. A laminate is calculated like a structure, because that is what it is: a structure you weave. On a supercar or a fast hull, there is no other way.

Provenance

Our hulls survey harbors as the CHCNAV APACHE 3. Our unmanned vessel carried LG U+ onto the water. Our composite work has served the inter-Korean joint waterway survey, crossed exhibition halls as a full supercar body, and flown as drone airframes. Our survey and utility hulls serve Korean public institutions, from the Korea Environment Corporation and K-water to the defense research community. The work leaves the house. That is the point.

The Story

The designer who builds.

Every YIMAN project begins the same way: with the founder's own hands on the clay. Shim Jae-hwan is a designer who never handed his drawings to someone else to build. Here, the person who shapes the line is the person who lays the fiber. And he teaches it: as an adjunct professor at Ajou Motor College, he passes the discipline to the next generation of Korean vehicle builders.

He came up through the era of Korea's first handmade supercar, the Spirra, close enough to try, while the final design went to other hands. Twenty years later the lineage came back to him: as Executive Vice President of Oullim Motors he directs the chassis and the carbon exterior design of SC24, and that body takes shape in his own atelier. What he once reached for in person, he built a house to do at full scale.

Ask him what he is proudest of, and he will not point at himself. He points at the work. His name appears on none of it: the survey vessels carry other companies' names into other harbors, and that is how he wants it. The project succeeds. The maker disappears.

Ask him why supercars, and the answer has never been money. He believes that shape should not belong only to the few who can afford it. Not a trophy for the one: a door for the many. That belief already has wheels. A golf cart with a muscle car's stance, detailed on these desks, is on its way to American driveways.

And ask him what a design is, and he will tell you what it is not: not the picture in his head, not the line on paper. A drawing owes nothing to anyone. An object must answer for itself, in water, on the road, in the air. A design is finished when it exists. That is why the clay, the fabric, the mold, and the carbon all live in one house. The distance between imagined and real is the entire business of YIMAN. We keep that distance short.
